Jennifer’s Answer

Manufacturing jobs are a great way to start your career. While starting out in the bottom positions, most companies will want you to grow your skills and will recognize advancement. I know someone who started out at 18 at a fireplace insert manufacturer and is now a supervisor at 20.
Many Technical Colleges will have programs for machinist type curriculum if you are interested in making a career of it. A lot of those programs will have contacts into the different manufacturing companies in your area and will hire people right out of the programs.
One other avenue would be to call the offices of companies near you and let them know you are interested in finding out how to make manufacturing a career. They often times have career fairs they regularly attend or open calls for workers.
Best wishes!

Jennifer recommends the following next steps:

Check out Technical College programs
Call the offices of manufacturing companies near you
Attend Career Fairs

Gulshan’s Answer

The world will always need things. So, things will always need to be manufactured. That's the evergreen aspect of manufacturing.

However, having said that, not all manufacturing is the same. Manufacturing the keyboard on which you typed your query is very different from the car in which you drive to work or school. Manufacturing rockets is a whole different ball game altogether. With the passage of time, there's a lot of automation, and then some. Robots are coming for many jobs, but guess what? Those robots also need to be manufactured!

And then there's all the aspects that drive manufacturing - manufacturing design, manufacturing economics, manufacturing automation, manufacturing ML. There are many related fields you should keep on your list of options and opportunities.

Good Luck!

Gulshan recommends the following next steps:

Start by looking at industries that rely on manufacturing
Try and get a view on which of them have a long future ahead of them
Read up on industry outlooks, published by leading publications / Analysts to get to such a shortlist
Look for possible specializations within manufacturing
