Hi Abbie,

I agree with Margaret. You should start in junior year with writing your essays, etc. However, to be honest, the process starts much sooner.

In your freshman and sophomore years, you have the opportunity explore your interests not only at your school but also in your community (sports, school clubs, volunteer work, other hobbies or activities). Start a folder of accomplishments. These could include participation in competitions, awards, prizes, leadership positions, community-service projects, volunteer work, memberships, projects, and the like. In other words, start building a strong resume.

During the summer, you could undertake internships or apply to summer schools. Some summer schools are quite competitive. The admissions requirements for such programs include personal statements, reference letters, transcripts, and may also include test scores.

Explore different universities. Attend their info sessions, understand both their expectations and school culture. What do they look for in an "ideal" applicant?

If possible, you could take PSAT at your school in Grade 10 and take challenging classes throughout high school but especially in Grades 11 and 12.

Though many schools now are test optional, SAT/ACT exams still may play a role. We need to see what happens after the pandemic. I recommend students to take such exams in Grade 11 and not leave in to the fall of Grade 12 since it will be quite stressful.

By Grade 11, it is also time for you to make a list of universities including your dream, target, and safety choices. Look at CommonApp essay prompts, explore creative writing, and definitely understand your financial options.

Finally, in Grade 12, you can start applying to universities around November and receive admission offers as early as December.

Good luck!

I would start in your junior year. If that's not possible, I would at least start the Common Application so you can work on your essay (and any essays for specific schools) and get your residency, ACT scores, etc... Then start applying the summer before your senior year through the spring (depending on if you want early decision or regular decision).
