This is called Living the Dream, but with some hard work, perseverance and talent, it can be a reality, too. I've edited travel magazines for 20 years, and been all over the Caribbean and the British Isles as a travel writer.

Starting a travel blog & social account is a great way to get going. As a tourism major, you already have some insights and expertise into a hugely popular industry, so your audience is essentially limitless. With enough followers, you'll eventually be able to negotiate media rates and other perks at resorts and travel companies.

It's also a great way to start networking in your industry, which in turn can land you that dream job of travel and flexibility while also providing some stability.

This is a tough time for the travel industry, but when we're finally putting this pandemic behind us, I think you'll find the tourism industry ready for a dramatic rebound, full of pent-up demand, which makes right now the perfect time to prepare. Good luck!

Brian’s Answer

A great way to be able to travel and help others is to start your own travel blog. More specifically start a travel social media account that connect with many different people throughout the world. There are millions of people who are looking for good content on traveling and good content is hard to find. If you put the time into quality content then people will find it and continue to comeback to you with advice.

At first - this will not be a lucrative business. But, as you build your following, you will find new monetization avenues such as being an amazon affiliate, ad revenue from your website, partnering with companies you like for sponsorships and so on.

For an example of how this can be done, check out thisworldrocks.com.

Brian recommends the following next steps:

Create your own website with a few articles on where you've been and what are the best things to do
Continuously add to the website
Create an instagram and facebook account for your blog
Start working with companies you enjoy to be a sponsor of their products
Monetize your content with ads if desired

Hello there!

Just like the two previous comments, starting a travel blog is one way to go! The road might be challenging (as you're building your following) but you need to remember to not give up and also continue to post content. After the pandemic is behind us, you could even get certain work visas to certain countries, my friend went and worked at a hotel in Ireland for a bit and loved it!

Dan’s Answer

Wow what a question! There are quite a few paths to get what you want. Getting started with your own Vlog or Personal Travel Service would work but it would be expensive at the start. If you get enough " street cred", maybe a resort company would sponsor you or you'd get enough views to earn ad space. Another way to get into the business would be to try and gain employment with a global hospitality company (i.e. Marriott, Holiday Inn, Hyatt) and work your way up. Companies like them have many openings worldwide and most allow for movement once you put time into each position.

Dan recommends the following next steps:

Pick your social media venue (Instagram, personal website)
Apply, apply, apply for jobs at large hospitality companies
Work hard at your craft
Try new things, visit new places
DONT GIVE UP! It's not an easy life, but could be very rewarding!
