There are a lot of job possibilities available to someone with a degree in Graphic Design.

As a graphic designer, there are three main avenues for being employed directly as a graphic designer:

• Working at a design agency - Many graphic designers will gravitate to working at agencies because they often get to work on a variety of highly creative things for local, national or global brands. These companies hire agencies to work on branding or target ad campaigns to help boost their business. A couple of examples of notable design agencies across the United States are Wieden + Kennedy (clients have included Nike and KFC) and Cripsin Porter + Bogusky (clients like Dominos and hotels.com) .

• Working as an in-house graphic designer - A lot of companies will employ an in-house graphic designer who will sit in either a marketing or creative department and work on creating materials that align to the company brand guidelines. Work can typically includes creating digital and print advertising, designing web pages, creating social media graphics, infographics, and more. While not as flashy as working at a design agency is often seen, these types of roles can be very fulfilling and stable. I myself have spent the majority of my career working as an in-house designer at different companies.

• Working as a freelancer - This option is something that can be done in addition to working at an agency or working as an in-house designer with a company or it can be done as a full time job. Graphic designers who work freelance can leverage a variety of websites geared towards freelancers to get hired on for short-term or long-term design projects, which can last anywhere from a few hours to a few years per assignment. Some freelance designers are able to build a client base of companies or individuals who work with them on projects throughout the year. This path provides the most freedom (you get to be your own boss and set your own hours) but also the most instability (it can be hard to build up a client-base, or find enough projects to meet your financial needs for the year).

In addition to working as a graphic designer, getting a degree in graphic design does open the door for you to move into a variety of other positions as well. A lot of the skillsets that you will learn as a graphic designer can be applied across many of the design fields, including product design, interior design, or industrial design.
