Ryan’s Answer

There are a lot of different careers that involve international travel. Often in business and consulting, people need to travel internationally all the time, but there are other careers that can also travel. In engineering for example, depending on the company you work with and the type of position you have, anyone from an entry level engineer to the CEO can travel internationally if needed. Sometimes a product might only be manufactured in one part of the world and you need to visit to determine if your company should buy it.

There are also some career fields that are dedicated to working with people in other countries, and so they need to travel. For example, I know someone who is an accountant, which is a job that usually doesn't have to travel, but because they work for the United Nations they do go to different countries around the world from time to time.

So there are many careers that can travel, but it may depend on your exact role within your company as to whether or not you get to travel.

Simeon’s Answer

One of the sure-fire ways I know to get into traveling abroad is to make it into a large company with international reach. The ones I am most familiar with are the big 4 accounting firms: KMPG, Deloitte, EY, and PwC. These are large auditing firms with international reach. If you can get an internship with one of these companies, do so. If you are able to land a job with one of them someday, you can work with your career team to work towards getting transferred into another country. Just know that the busy seasons can be long, with many people work 70+ hours a week during busy season, so make sure you know the cost of the opportunity up front.

Madhav’s Answer

Travelling for work should be possible in many careers. If the frequency of travel is important, some of the suggestions in the other answers like working for management consulting firms, consulting firms in general, purchasing departments, should provide ample opportunities. But the pandemic has brought a lot of this to a standstill and companies are still functioning, so the whole need for travel could be questioned. If you want to travel and live in different places then it is a matter of working for global companies that support movement in this manner. Software engineering careers provide opportunities to travel because of the need for good talent around the globe, but again in this pandemic we are currently demonstrating that we can work effectively in a remote fashion.

Kayla’s Answer

Consulting is a job that typically requires a large amount of travel and provides opportunities to travel the world. One thing to note is that there are many different types of consulting to consider (strategy, technology, change management, etc), so you have endless options.

When I was a technology consultant, I traveled domestically Monday-Thursday of every week and then eventually was given the opportunity to join an international project which went to Europe or Asia for two weeks each month!

Consulting is a field that requires long hours and a passion for the job, but will allow you to travel the world and also provides a lot of additional benefits such as hotel points and airline miles which you can use to travel on your own for free.

Kayla recommends the following next steps:

If you're interested in learning more about consulting opportunities, look into companies like Deloitte, KPMG, PWC and EY - all have something different to offer!
