Carolyn’s Answer

Be highly targeted. Scoring an intro meeting is like professional dating. You can't go right to a marriage proposal, you have to pique their professional interest first.

Find a company who has a need for what you are selling. Depends what you mean by Digital Marketing, but if you mean digital advertising, then look at their keyword basket/spend, and identify a few places they could optimize. Be REALLY relevant to their use case. For example, if they are spending $X on Keyword A , and no money on Keyword B which has a high correlation or low competition, that is a great opportunity for expansion. That is the kind of value that companies want from their digital agency, so if you can offer it up at the start, you are FAR MORE LIKELY to get a conversation going, which can then lead to an opportunity.

Even in the world of digital, everything is still about relationships. My advice would be utilize your people network to find opportunities and a place to begin. Also, utilize that same network to advocate and broadcast your professional brand and the value you can bring to the connections made through that network.

Create your personal brand and niche. Like in any field, try to specialize in areas or industries you are most interested in. This will really help you stand out in your chosen competitive market. Many marketers tend to choose more broader industry groups. But if you can be specific you can really showcase your achievements in that particular area. Organization really want a customized, personalized experience and by showing that you really understand their pain points and struggles you will have a much warmer lead.

Creating a brand for yourself can be helpful, start from there. Create some content to show examples of your skill, it can be something very small (maybe an ad or a creative that you designed for your college) and upload them on social media platforms to get the recognition. Freelance and reach out to small businesses, they would appreciate your work. Start networking (on social media or physically) let people know about your venture. This process might take some time, but do not give up and experiment as much as you can!!! All the best!!
