Can I major in business and go on to medical school?

Is this is a challenging path or would it leave me unprepared for the MCAT?

Candace’s Answer

You could, but there is coursework required in the sciences in order to get into medical school. I have included a link that gives you an idea of what college courses you need to get into medical school. Good luck!!

Jack’s Answer

You can major in anything but you have to take the math and science courses that are required tomget into medical school. There is always a small percentage of students who major in something other than a science degree but it just makes the process harder because of the lack of flexibility of what electives you might want to take in your major or some other field.

Jason’s Answer

Yes, you can get a business degree and then go to medical school. However, you will need to take some core classes that are required for any medical school admittance. Most of these can be considered your "science" classes needed for your Bachelors. These classes can most often be taken CHEAPLY at your local community college. No need to spend thousands doing them at a university.

William’s Answer

Yes, you can major in Business and go to Medical School. Medical Schools like to see diversity in the educational background of their medical students. Ultimately, it leads to more diverse and better educated physicians.

You do need to keep in mind while in undergraduate school to get at least the minimum courses medical schools want to see, such as biology etc. While in undergraduate school check with the medical schools you might be interested in as to their minimum requirements.

Hope I have been of some help.

Richard’s Answer

I am a retired dentist who received a Bachelors of Science in Commerce (BSC) before going to dental school. The business degree helped me run my practice and provided me an advantage over my fellow classmates on understanding the business side of practicing dentistry. Spend the time and effort to get your business degree, then concentrate on MCAT. You will benefit greatly from your business degree.

Thank you comment icon hey, how did you get into dental school then, what courses did you do after you completed your business degree. (I am currently a first year business student and just wanted to know and be assured that getting a business degree will not hinder me from pursuing anything in the future) amama

Robert’s Answer

My undergraduate major was Electrical Engineering, and I was accepted at one school that viewed it as a positive. I was rejected by one school that viewed it as a negative. The fact is, it will probably depend on the admissions committee of the school to which you apply how they view your major. Also, you still have to complete the course requirements for the medical schools to which you apply. You may end up having to take a heavier course load to meet the prerequisites for medical school and graduate with a business major.

All in all, it is probably more important how well you do in your chosen major than what your chosen major is. Your grades in the prerequisite courses and on the MCAT test should be plenty for the admissions committee to compare you to other, more common majors.
