Sammy,
Another great question. After medical school, you will need to “match” into a residency program for pediatrics. Residency takes place in a hospital setting and there will be senior residents, attending physicians and program directors overseeing your work.

If you decide to sub-specialize with a fellowship after residency, ex: peds GI, peds EM, peds cardio, you will continue to get direct supervision from those further along in their training as well as the attending.

Once you take your first job after graduating residency or fellowship, you will be responsible for your clinical work, but the owners of the practice or management of the healthcare system will oversee how well you work with the team, meeting their goals and contributing positively to the workplace.

Hi Sammy!

Pediatricians can work in a number of environments, such as hospitals, private practice offices, health maintenance organizations, community health centers, public health clinics, etc. By the time you actually become a Pediatrician you will have done your residency, etc. Assuming you start your own practice, you will basically be the boss. You will be very well trained and shouldn't have any issues.

Some Pediatricians partner with groups or another Pediatrician to basically shadow and learn from. This also allows for a passing of the baton. It may be over the course of twenty or thirty years and can work very well for both the seasoned Pediatrician and the less experienced.

Many Pediatricians contract with hospitals. Pediatricians and hospitals must intimately work together or care does not get delivered. At the same time, hospitals and physicians directly compete. Pediatricians can also be employees of hospitals. In this case they would report to management/HR.

Hope this helps!
Mark
