Gadeer’s Answer

Do you think that a firefighter is a good career?

This question really comes down to a matter of opinion so it differs from person to person. I can see it both ways. Personally, I believe being a firefighter is no small thing. If this is something you chose to pursue then I admire you. You will be in a position to help people in their biggest time of need. As someone else already mentioned, that is a very satisfying and gratifying career.

However, that being said, it is not for everyone. You have to have the stomach to see some of the world's most gruesome things. Think major injures and burned bodies. On top of that, the hours are not ideal, you are always at risk, and you want to consider your mental health depending on what you see on the job.

Rick’s Answer

My father was a career firefighter, and later a Captain and Assistant Chief. He saved many lives and was respected and loved all around the Chicago suburb we lived in. He was brave and an excellent leader. He was knowledgeable enough to be a paramedic as well. From what I can see, it is a much better paying job today, especially if you come in with some education, and add the paramedic piece. The other good thing is where he worked the schedule for firefighters was 24 hours on, 48 hours off. Every firefighter had a second career-mostly in the trades-and they all supported each other. We always knew where to go to get carpeting, plumbing, whatever we needed. When my father was there he earned a lot less, but he did get a decent pension.
But on the negative side you are away from your family for 24 hours at a time, there are fires at all hours and all weather, and you are risking your life to save others. You have to weight that in as well.
