For a career in research, do you recommend getting an MD and a PhD so you can leave the clinical option open?

I have talked with a professional in my chosen field and they suggested getting an MD because it allows you to do both the clinical and research side of the field. I'm pretty sure I only want to do research but I think I need more information about it. #medicine #biology

Hi Lauren H.,

It depends on the field. M.D., Ph.D. has it owns advantages. If you want to go to general biology, Ph.D. is definitely enough for you. Some particular fields such as cancer, clinical data will be very important. As a M.D., Ph.D. you will be able to collect those data by yourself, but as a Ph.D. you will need to collaborate with M.D.

I am not saying collaboration is not good, it's great but you need connection. Speaking of career option, having both M.D. and Ph.D. is a leverage (cautions: it is never easy).
