Megan’s Answer

My best advice would be to write an essay that is unique to your personal experiences and has influenced your life strongly. If an experience or an event had a strong impact it's more likely that it will be memorable and generate a strong powerful essay. The common application leaves the essay pretty open ended so the options of topics are broad. Try to pick a topic that colleges haven't already read hundreds of essays about the same thing. If the essay is optional for the college application, I would recommend doing it. It can't hurt and will only enhance your application.

Other things that make a difference to colleges is to convey what made your high school experience yours. Colleges look for a balance between academics and involvement when selecting applicants. If you are able to get involved and maintain high academics this will most likely stand out on your application. Make sure your application is thorough and thought out. Good luck in your college search!

Colette’s Answer

Colleges mainly look for individuals who are well-rounded, but at the same time are passionate and dedicated to the activities they participate in, not just dipping their toes into many different things. Really try to make an impact in each organization or team or activity you are in, and try to gain leadership experience. This is something that can stand out to colleges. Then, when it is time to apply, write essays that show how you are unique and can contribute something different to the university, while still fitting into their culture. I recommend highlighting a trait or experience of yours that is special to you, then applying it to how it can be used to positively impact the University. However, the most important thing is that the essay fits the prompt you are responding to. Now, most of the topics are pretty broad, but it is also important to show that you are appropriately responding to the prompt you are asked.

Colette recommends the following next steps:

Find activities, teams, or clubs you are interested in and immerse yourself in all of what they do.
Figure out what traits or experiences are unique to you and can make you stand out.

Anna Carolina’s Answer

Colleges want students that stand out, but that will also fit in with their current student demographic. Since you usually write one essay for multiple colleges you can't tailor your essay to each individual college that you are applying to. So, the nest thing you can do is highlight what makes you, you! Writing a memorable essay will make it easier for the people that look at so many applications to remember who you are.

Also, if you can, join a club! I thought that clubs weren't that important, but having little extracurriculars hurt me a lot during my college application process.

Anna Carolina recommends the following next steps:

Do not skip out on college counseling, and have someone look over your essay! Getting feedback on your essay will allow you to show who you are more truthfully!
