Shawn’s Answer

I like the diversity of projects and products an ME degree prepares one to work upon. The ME degree program exposes one to the other classic engineering areas while developing depth in thermal/fluids, machine design, and materials. This broad educational scope places an ME in the unique position of being able to work in any area and have more career mobility, very important during economic downturns. Many MEs are able to advance rapidly into project and corporate leadership positions while others prefer to continue practicing engineering. Neither route is better just different. Your career path is a function of what you want it to be and inner drive to make the vision occur. More importantly gender has nothing to do with being a ME - it’s about being true to oneself.

Ray’s Answer

While I am not a mechanic, but rather an engineer working in maintenance, what I love most about my job is feeling like I've made improvements to my organization that help them to do what they do. I have worked in multiple industries and another aspect that I enjoy is the versatility in terms of where I can work, from an oil refinery to a mine to a pharmaceutical manufacture. All these industries use the same types of equipment, and as long as you are versed in how to repair and care for the equipment, the industry does not matter, which really helps when there is a lull or down turn in one industry, as you still have marketable skills that can translate to another industry. I will be honest, being a female in maintenance can be harder then it is for a male and many places I have worked, I have been the only female on the maintenance team, but that should not deter you from pursuing this line of work.
