Emma’s Answer

I teach Biology in South Carolina. Science teachers are in high demand right now (as a matter of fact—most teachers are!). I did not major in education, but rather joined teaching through Teach For America. It is a program to help aspiring leaders get into education even if they did not get certified or major in education in college.

James’s Answer

I teach Special Education grades 6th-8th and a variety of subjects including Science, Social Studies, Math and social skills. I joined Teach For America in order to obtain teaching credentials after working in several other fields. Having experience in other fields has helped me share different stories and perspectives with my scholars, and hopefully has made some of my lessons more interesting. One day I hope to teach English because of all the subjects, it probably is the subject I am most qualified to teach. Teaching is a great profession!

Hannah’s Answer

I taught biology and environmental science to 10th and 11th graders, as well as middle school science to 7th and 8th graders. I wasn't expecting to love teaching middle school as much as I did!

Lisa’s Answer

I teach Math and where I live teacher only teach what they are certified for. If you teach outside of your certification you must send a letter to parents telling them that you are not certified. No one wants to do that.

Richard’s Answer

When I was a teacher both in the high school and college level, I taught General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. I had a Ph.D. in Biochemistry to get these teaching jobs.

Paige’s Answer

I currently teach 4th grade, all subjects in South Carolina! During undergrad, I student taught in a 1st grade class and 2nd grade class, then I got my first teaching job out of college in 2nd grade! It's definitely my favorite grade to teach because I love the younger students. It takes a lot of patience to work with young ones all day, but it is so rewarding. I also spent some time teaching 6th grade English, which I found really difficult because I found it was more difficult to manage that age group, but my personal workload was much lighter since I was only planning for one subject.

Zahid’s Answer

When I was doing alternative certification, my focus was on grades 4-8 math and science. When I was doing my master in teaching, I was teaching math, business and IT to grades 7 to 12 in. And when I got my teaching License, I took the test to teach k-12 IT. Sometimes teachers will also teach subjects that are out of their expertise. This is or was common when I was in middle school. In HS, my psychology and math teachers were football coaches.
