Though I attended MIT long ago and I doubt I could get in now, let me take a shot at your question! Certainly you will need a high GPA, good test scores, and a long record of challenging yourself academically and succeeding, but those will be just prerequisites. Other things you can consider are: (1) How can you demonstrate your well-roundedness (through extracurriculars, etc.)? (2) How can you demonstrate you are a good citizen (e.g., through community service)? (3) How can you demonstrate a passion for technology and changing the world?

Since you're in San Francisco, there will likely be seminars/events you can attend with other prospective students where you can learn more and receive another perspective.

It's worth bearing in mind that even if you check every little box there are far more students qualified to attend MIT than will actually get to attend. So even if MIT is your dream school, ensure you have examined a few other college options as well so you will be happy wherever you end up. MIT actually wasn't my top university choice when I was your age, though it has set me up well for success in my career.

Hi Vaidehi,

While I myself did not go to MIT, as someone who has been through college, one of the biggest things to know is that colleges are looking at you with a holistic approach, i.e. they are looking at you as a whole person, not just your GPA or SAT scores. Are you part of any clubs? Do you do anything outside of school to show that you are passionate about things that are not academic? While grades are important, colleges also want to see that you have a passion for something and that you are invested in your passions long-term. You do not have to fit all of your interests into this mold, but I would recommend, if you have not already, that you join a club and stay in that club. Show yourself having increasing responsibility or investment in the club. If you started out as a general member, the next year you ran for treasurer or helped as photographer. Not only does it show that you are a person, but it also helps you have things to write about in your college essays. Congrats on your GPA and good luck for the SAT! Hope this helps.

You should also have some extracurricular activities whether it be a volunteer group or a club you are active in. It's a huge plus if you also have or had a leadership position :)

Hi Vaidehi,

MIT is a good school and will have many students applying. I would try to research what the school is like. What type of students do they like? What is the culture like? MIT is known for its IT/technology curriculum - is that what you would want to focus?

Some criteria all competitive schools will look for:
- Good GPA
- Good SAT Score
- Extracurricular Activities - something that shows dedication to a sport, instrument, hobby, etc.
- Leadership
