what are some of the best things to do to become a lawyer?

I've always been so intrigued by the cases that lawyers have to deal with but the problem is that I'm not sure how to become one. i would just like more knowledge on it.

You may want to reach out to your local city or county court for volunteer opportunities that could possibly get you closer to observing cases being tried in front of judge. This would allow you the experience to witness lawyers in action. Another option you might want to consider is volunteering your time to assist a lawyer with administrative duties in their office, like filing, answering phones, etc. You’d be surprised how much you could absorb by simply being in the atmosphere of a law office. And lastly, if your school has a debate club, I’m sure this would prove useful in exercising some of those skills needed to practice law.

By giving these options a try, it'll also grant you the opportunity to determine whether becoming a lawyer is something you'd truly enjoy before actually committing to the journey.

Hope this helps!

Absolutely agree that working at a law office would be really helpful. Perhaps reach out to the Tennessee state bar association to see if they have any events or resources for high school students. Another idea is to search for legal access clinics and other legal non-profits in your area and find out if they have volunteering opportunities.

I agree with the advice to work in a law office or with a local lawyer who needs administrative help. You can also look up your state bar association which often has informational programs for students that are aspiring lawyers. There are many mock trial programs for students, run by bar associations or local law schools, which will give you a fictional case to argue in front of real judges and lawyers. It is a good idea to talk to Civics teachers at your school about your interest, they may also have some resources for local lawyers and court resources for you to tap into. Good luck and I hope this helps!

Cathy’s Answer

Hi Angel - You can pursue any area of studies for college, and then decide whether you want to go to law school. The great thing about that is if you decide not to go to law school, you have a degree of interest to you, ready for another career. (Note that if you may want to be a patent attorney in the U.S., though, you may want to consider getting an engineering degree or other STEM degree.) I agree with other comments here by others regarding getting some experience in your community in a legal field, whether volunteering or job in an attorney's office or court system. I did not take that path myself but know many people who have and they said it really helped them get a better idea what practicing would be like. It's a great profession for those highly interested in it. We get to help a lot of people with very interesting challenges, and it can be extremely rewarding. Best wishes to you as you explore this field!
