I am not an Orthodontist but I was interested in this myself and my father was a dentist and I have many orthodontist friends. You will absolutely get paid more if you run your own office and your own business. Waiting to get paid through insurance is a huge part of your business as well. I have heard and seen the frustration with the office staff since most dentists have gone to school for medicine and not business- many aspects of this can be difficult and require you to rely on a fantastic office manager and staff. Some in the medical field have a hard time excelling in both areas. Business and Medicine. As far as schooling please note that you will need to be in pre med for 4 years and then go to a school of dentistry after graduating with your BS. You will need to take the MCAT or GRE for the admission process to medical school. That will be another 4 years for your DDS or Doctor of Dentistry and then you will need to go 2 more years for specialty in Orthodontics. I hop that helps a little. Can be a great, flexible, highly paying job if it is your passion. Also please note if you need to apply for Grants or help with tuition- the military has special medical grants for graduate school a year of year and there are other grants that if you work in an area of need where there are limited dentists or orthodontists the government will assist in paying back your student loans. Lots of great options.
