Internships (regardless what company/organization you do it with) can be a good source of experience for when you graduate college and help you prepare for what it's like to work in a professional environment.

It's also often a good thing for a prospective employer to see on your resume. A hiring manager will be more likely to choose a candidate with prior internship experience over one without. Additionally, internships at a given company can be a good foot in the door for future employment with that company. Many companies will have internship -> full time employment pipelines for that reason.

IBM in particular is a well-established company with name recognition, so it would be advantageous to have an internship with IBM on your resume. You'll want to do some research into the kinds of work being offered for any internship with any company, along with the company's general culture to make sure it'd be a good fit for you (especially if you think you might want to pursue full-time employment there).

Darlene’s Answer

Internships are always a good idea for several reasons. When you do an internship, you get to see what a particular job is like, and that can help you decide on a future career. Also, you can make valuable networking connections by getting to know people who may be in a position to offer you a full-time job some day or to act as a mentor. Internships always look good on a resume. They show an employer that you have concrete knowledge of their industry and that you have the skills and experiences that they are looking for.

The great thing about internships is that, since they are temporary, you can do several over the course of your education without committing to any job. If you are deciding between marketing or finance, for example, you can do internships in both to see which better fits with your skills and interests.

Darlene recommends the following next steps:

Talk to your career advisor/guidance counselor about internship listings, see if your school has a platform where they are posted.
Tell everyone that you know that you are interested in an internship, you never know why may know someone.
Check company websites to see if they list internships. IBM may list their internship opportunities there.
Use sites like Indeed or Internships.com

Based on my personal experience, your first internship at a big company like IBM is more about observing, learning and reflecting. Besides receiving some money incentives, it all also expose you what real work life of your internship role looks like. You might like or not like it. The foretaste will help do better planning about your future.
