Jen’s Answer

CareerVillage can give you exposure to people and ideas outside of your own everyday circle. It seems to provide a safe space for one to get advise from people you otherwise might not have met.

I, personally, had no idea what career path was right for me at your age. I even went in "undeclared" into college. Through meeting new people and taking different types of classes, I learned about career paths I had never known existed and found one that suited me that I love. I know many people, however, who have studied a subject in college, but then gone on to build successful careers outside of the major they had in college. My sister has even had 3 different careers before finding the one she truly loves. Don't be afraid to explore new things and make changes to your path as you proceed through your education and career. Most importantly, don't feel like you have to have all the answers right now.

I feel pretty confident in saying that those of us professionals providing advice here want nothing but the best for you.

Kevin’s Answer

Hi Karla - all great answers below. Career Village is a great place to get perspective from professionals in the working world and hear about other's journey that led them to where they are. As someone who has only been out of college and in the workforce for a little over 5 years, I love hearing advice and stories from those with more experience than myself, and Career Village can be a great place to get that. I've always found it awesome to hear stories from people who are in a profession that is totally different than what they originally studied in school. Great reminder that we can always follow our passion, even if it differs from our original plan.

Best of luck in school!

Mayra’s Answer

I 100% agree with Jen's answer. Receiving some life tips, hearing personal experiences, and obtaining kind words of advice from professionals on a platform like CareerVillage can be very helpful if you are willing to welcome the advice and warm thoughts.

I recommend you start off by writing down your likes and dislikes to hone in a bit on what you would like to learn more about, and what you absolutely want to avoid. Feeling like you need to make big decisions is overwhelming and can be a bit scary, but sorting out thoughts into paper and working on little bits at a time may be a good way to realizing a great plan of action. However, always know that the plans can change, and that is encouraged as adaptability is important. Overall, I believe keeping a growth mindset is key.

James Constantine’s Answer

Dear Karla,

We provide certainty for young people making plans because we were in a similar situation studying and starting work 50 years ago. We do expect people to follow in our footsteps exactly, but we set examples of what is possible, tenable, from our experience in researching facts, openings. Career Village is actually a Godsend for us all.

Artificial intelligence is a tool to investigate facts, like the Encyclopedia Britannica or Google. It can also be used to clarify expression and terminology. I enjoy this work immensely because we are giving life advice in dealing with responsibilities.

One thing in life holds true, you will be led where your passion, interests, cares and concerns take you. Some temporary fascinations fade because stronger priorities appear. Especially when it comes to the loss of loved ones. I dropped astronomy when my dead uncle's old supervisor arrived at my university. I took up biochemistry. I wanted to understand the disease process.

The story was that this Professor of Biochemistry had the knowledge to teach me why the Greek males in my family were dying of cardiovascular disease. High cholesterol from animal fats.

The old adage that we learn from experience, and the experiences of others is true. I became a dietitian after dad died. I helped many other people throughout Australia. I continued nutrition education software development programming from 1972 to the present day.

GOD BLESS YOU!
JC.
