Why do we need to learn how to prepare for our careers and how does it help our future?

I used to participate in a lot of career programs to learn something about how to write a resume. And I also get to know the college system as well. However, I still feel that's not enough.

Learn as much as you can to prepare yourself for a future career:
- Start with research: through your school, the library, and the internet, find out as much requirements are necessary for that career.
- Get an assessment done to see which careers would be compatible for you; there a many free quizzes to narrow down a career for you.
- Seek out professionals in the career you are interested in and set up an appointment to interview them. Examples: What did you do to prepare for this career? How did you go about finding about this career? What are the pros/Cons about this career? Do you enjoy your career? Is there a good work/life balance from this career? Are there internships for this career?
- Create a student resume, then in college, another resume, then as your career begins, update resume every 6 months with additional skills.
- In college, you will also have an additional 4 years to prepare; your career path may also change in that time. Be prepared for change.
- Does the military have a career field that you are interested in? They will train you and pay for your college, and can be accomplished in 4 years.
- Continue to plan and prepare as it is in your best interest, the one thing I learned early on in my career was: poor preparation = poor execution 100% of the time. Example: no one goes camping with just a sleeping bag.
I wish you well in finding a career that best suits you.

Colleen’s Answer

It helps to be prepared no matter what career path you choose. The more you know about the career before you enter it, the more comfortable and aware you will be. For example, a career in teaching has many pathways. Learning about each academic level will help when you decide where to apply. I thought that I would enjoy elementary school nursing and dislike middle or high school. Actually, middle school turned out to be my favorite. I enjoy being able to speak with students as young adults and have in-depth conversations with them. Elementary school nursing is very busy and requires a lot of patience. If I prepared myself before apply by speaking with experienced nurses, I would have know this is advance to applying.

Being prepared will also help avoid surprises that you did not anticipate. Many people think school nursing is just band aids and ice packs, an easy job. Nope. I am the only medical person in a building of 500 people. I have very little resources in an emergency. Just last week a student had a severe asthma attack and forgot his inhaler. I almost had to perform CPR by the time medics arrived. The misunderstanding of the work school nurses do leads to heavy turnover. Nurses come in unprepared for the workload.

Rosalyn’s Answer

We need to learn to prepare for our careers because students need to know the process for applying for and being accepted to a college. This is aided by school counselors that introduce students to college catalogues that reveal courses are needed to order to be accepted to a college or university. Counselors also assist students with applications for financial aide and college admission. Students learn to consult the catalogue to learn what courses will need to be completed and in what order. These steps are important because it allows a smooth transition for the student from high school to college. In cases where students are not certain about what they would like to major in, counselors can assist them to determine what field they would like to major in.

Diya’s Answer

It's important to prepare to your career as best you can to determine what path you want to choose. Preparation for career includes:

- Writing a resume
- Networking
- Meeting with professionals in the industry you want to be in
- Working with your school or advisor to find the right college which offers courses that fit your ambitions
- Getting an internship in a company where you want to work

Remember that people switch careers often and one career is not for life. However, it's important to get as much information as possible when you begin to find a path which works for you. Sometimes you have to prepare more in order to be able to find the path for yourself even if you do not yet know what that path is.

Anya’s Answer

It is important to prepare for your career so you are able to use those same tools when you are looking to pivot. I began in insurance after college but decided I wanted to pivot to consulting after two years. Insurance and healthcare consulting are a bit different but I noticed I needed to utilize the same skills when it came to building my resume, applying for jobs, and preparing for interviews. All the preparation from college made it very easy to get back into this groove and it wasn't as intimidating as the first time.

Samantha’s Answer

Very simply - you need to figure out your purpose. What is your passion? What would you enjoy doing as a career? Once you have figured this out, then learning how to prepare for your future comes easily. You will find doors open to you. You have the rest of your life to live. You must create income and you must spend your time doing something. So doing something that you love that brings in money is exactly where you want to be. REMEMBER: if you are passionate about something that doesn't bring in enough money then create multiple sources of income so that you can continue doing what you love.
