What may help with getting an internship in publishing or editing?

I'm going to college for a English degree and I want to get an internship at the end of my two years. The internship, I would like it to deal with publishing and editing.

Hello, Elizabeth - Do you have a specific type of publishing/editing career in mind? Book publishing is different from newspaper/magazine publishing. Also, there are opportunities in non-media sectors for good editors. Just to give you an example, North Richland Hills Communications Department does a lot of PR work so that's a possibility (https://www.nrhtx.com/131/Communications). There are newspapers in your area as well (http://northeastnews.org). You can also try this site for some ideas: http://www.texasbooklover.com/p/texas-publishers.html.
In short, there are a lot of opportunities out there but you need to decide which one is right for you. Good luck and best wishes to you.

Start by requesting a job shadow. You'll get a feel for the company and it's possibilities and vice versa for the with you. If you can edit any publications at school do so. If there are local papers in the area, try writing freelance to get your foot in the door and work your way up. The most forward way to do it would be to create your own online publication and get some readership, that's a resume in itself.
Thank you comment icon Thank you. Another question for you: What's the best way to create my own online publication? Can you tell me more about that topic? Elizabeth
Thank you comment icon So sorry I didn't see this. I wish I could give you my email. An easy way to start would be by using Wix or Wordpress or something similar. A web host that has templates made for creating publications. As you research and follow others, you'll be able to build better content and layout. Hope that helps. Khalia Robinson

Look to the book publishing field. Newspapers are unlikely to put an intern in an editing role, which demands high-level skills. The smaller the paper... think small-town papers that are stretched thin for competent writers - the better your chances. One last bit of advice: if you don't have copies of the AP and Chicago style manuals, buy them. It's your writing and editing Bible. Good luck!

Stefania’s Answer

Internships are an excellent idea to help you get a better feel of the job you are aspiring to do after you get out of school. Good for you for taking the initiative. I would look up publishing houses and magazine publications you are interested in online. Read up on them, then reach out to them and ask about internship or job-shadowing opportunities. Sometimes internship opportunities are listed right on their websites. Be sure to pull together a solid, clear and brief picture of who you are, what your job aspirations are and importantly, why you want to be part of their organization even as an intern. Why are you impressed with their company? What have they done and why you want to be part of it. Good luck!
