Have you embarked upon a different career path than the one your major was ideally for?

I want to know how common it is to drift away from a major that one would study in college. #college #college-major

Yes, it is VERY common. I majored in classics (aka ancient history) and now work in marketing for a tech company. Many jobs are just looking for a degree - it shows you have the drive and dedication to commit to earning it. Some of it also comes down to how you position your skills/experience/knowledge. I had an unpaid internship one summer during college at a small local museum - When interviewing for my current job I referenced back to that to show my dedication and time management since I was balancing 2 jobs - unpaid internship and paid coffee barista. I also explained why the skills I learned were useful - taking all the historical information about something and using it to write a meaningful and interesting description plaque. In my current job I have to take a ton of information and figure out how to present it concisely and in an interesting manner.

Christie’s Answer

Great question- every one does. I was a business major with a concentration in finance and now I design training material. It is not uncommon to find physiology majors teaching math or music majors working in finance. My advice would be to explore what interest you early on in your high school career via classes you take (business, art, etc.) or summer programs. I attended a yearbook camp one semester. This way what you choose to major in will be more closely align to the field you actual choose to work in.
