Matthew’s Answer

I would say midway through college is the best time (i.e. sophomore or junior year). As a freshman you are just figuring things out and to throw living in an even more foreign environment, often with foreign languages, would be quite overwhelming I would think. Senior year is often the year to finish all of those last minute class requirements that get overlooked or forgotten about. Therefore I found, for my personal study abroad experience, junior to be the best fit.

Summer study abroad terms are also a good option if you don't want to be abroad for a full semester or can't afford to miss a full semester of courses at your specific school. Having said that, I think studying abroad is a fantastic opportunity and should be taken advantage of if presented with it!

Marissa’s Answer

Hi Madisen,

Great question! I would say halfway through your college career would be the ideal time. I was crunched taking courses, so I did a summer study abroad, which was only 8 weeks compared to several months. There will never be a time in your life again where you have the time to embrace a culture, taking exciting classes, and make new friends! It was honestly the best time of my life being in Italy for 8 weeks, and I had a new appreciation for the world. Good luck!

I agree that Sophomore or Junior year is the BEST time to study abroad, but honestly if the opportunity comes to study abroad at any other time I'd say go for it! My study abroad experience changed my world and many of my friends ended up moving to the country we studied abroad upon graduation.

I would agree with what everyone has said and say sophomore or junior year is the ideal time to study abroad. Senior year is difficult to study abroad because that is when you are taking your higher-level classes, which usually have to be taken at your home university. If you know you want to study abroad, I would also recommend that you start saving some gen-ed courses or other related courses because that will give you more options to choose from when searching for a program.
