Your applying because you are wanting learn more about the field, so, unless a portfolio is required, "displaying your skills" is not as important as displaying your passion, drive and excitement for the field.

Things to consider to doing that will display this passion, drive, and excitement would be showcasing any internship or volunteer projects that you may have worked on. Were you an individual or a contributor to the project or software development, etc.? What role did you play and what did you learn through the experience. This can be shown in a presentation via a portfolio, video, more traditional presentation (PPT or Prezi, etc.).

Don't worry about trying to impress the selection committee (they've seen it all), just be yourself and reflect your passion, drive, and desire to learn. This is what they are looking for in their students.

I know someone who was applying for a scholarship. She created a simple video that told her personal story how her passion for her field grew within her (it even included childlike drawings in a story board format) . This was actually for a scholarship that was only $5K. Turned out, the committee was so moved by it, they wanted to pay for her full tuition for each year of her graduate program. She completed a Master's Program that was fully funded by a family foundation that loved her passion.

Passion and drive can often times take you further than pure knowledge and skill alone.

Best of luck and let your passion shine through!

Hi there! Since you are just entering college, only your basics are necessary (your act/sat, any of your ap test scores etc.)

I would recommend that you take a summer camp relative to the field you'd like to join. When I was in high school I took a camp for science and mathematics. They trained me in various sciences, held competitions, and allowed you to feel what the college life is like. It's very helpful and also looks good when applying for scholarships.

Since you are going into the CS field, try brushing up on basic computer logic if you aren't familiar. Look into trying some online java programming or check out a book on operating systems. Begin looking into discreet mathematics and brush up on your other math skills such calculus and statistics. These are just recommendations to help you get ready for the program.

Finally I'd recommend you begin looking at job shadowing as well as listings on LinkedIn (build yourself a profile while you are there too!) they will give you insight on what you will need to be proficient in outside of classes as well.

I hope this helps, if you have any more questions feel free to reach out to me. I do this stuff everyday. Good luck! :)
