Hello,

The college admissions process can seem overwhelming at times; however, most institutions have admissions counselors. Admissions counselors are there to help you through the application process.

1. Determine where you would like to go to school. Look at the website of the school, see what they have to offer -- majors, clubs you might be interested in, support services (tutoring, counseling, recreational facilities -- most schools have these), volunteer opportunities

2. Look at the admissions criteria - SAT/ACT requirements, high school classes - math, English, language

3. If things look okay, you may want to begin the admissions process by completing the application. Many schools have a link to an application portal online. Sometimes there are application fees. Some schools may waiver an application fee or may have a period where all prospective students have their application fees waived

4. If you are able, arrange for a campus visit. This will help you determine if the school will meet your needs (academic, social, physical and spiritual needs -- whichever is important to you).

5. When you are accepted, you will receive notifications from the school alerting you of New Student Orientation (NSO)-- some schools require attendance. NSO is a great place to meet new students prior to the start of classes. Some NSOs will introduce you to current student assistants, allow you to see a residence hall room and other facilities. I recommend attending NSO if you are able to do so.

Please note that all four and two-year institutions have an admissions process. Some two-year colleges may not require the SAT/ACT score; however, if you have them, they may use them to place you in the appropriate class for math, for example. Two-year colleges also have orientations and admissions offices.

Finally, if you have any questions regarding admission to a college or university, reach out to the admissions office at the institution where you want to apply. Also, do not forget that if you are in high school you have your guidance counselor and teachers who may be able to help you.

If your question relates to how can you become a college admissions counselor then you may want to look at characteristics that are fitting for a college admissions counselor. Based upon my answer regarding how to become admitted to a college, you can see that an admissions counselor is one of the first individuals a prospective student will encounter. Therefore, admissions counselors need to have good people skills. Being able to anticipate concerns and ask questions of individuals is very important. Energy is important, in some institutions, full-time admissions counselors help train the student tour guides.

As far as the work, admissions counselor may be asked to travel and during the busy season of student recruitment, may feel as if they live out of their suitcase or on their phone or in Zoom, google meet spaces.
I hope this helps

To get an idea of what college admissions counselors do, you may want to checkout the following:

The National Association of College Admissions Counselors

Also, if you are in high school, you may want to call your local college or university to see if you can shadow someone in the admissions office. If you are in college, you can do the same but at your current institution.

Anyone interested in admissions counseling also may benefit from reading job descriptions. Higheredjobs.com is a good place to see job descriptions of a variety of occupations in higher education.

I hope this helps

Hey, Enrique, I believe your question was. How do you become a College Admissions Officer?

An admissions officer is a student representative who communicates with university candidates about their applications and schedules consultations with prospective students. Admissions officers are organized, able to process large groups of student payments, and responsible for maintaining accurate student records. Admissions officers often pursue a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject like education admissions or financial aid before applying for the role. They also typically have up to 3 years of work experience recruiting and processing the applications of job candidates and university students.

If you want to help students enroll in schools and create programs to increase student retention, you might be interested in becoming an admissions officer. It's a position that's often ideal for professionals who have a genuine enthusiasm for networking with students and improving their circumstances. Reading about how admissions officers get hired might help you draft a stronger resume, plan for the interview, or negotiate your employment contract.
