Hi Miguel,

I love that you're asking this question! The opportunity to learn throughout a career can be a really important factor in having a fulfilling professional life. As a CareerVillage staff team member, I learn something from my colleagues every single day. I also get to learn from other professional responses on CareerVillage.org! It's a huge part of what makes my job exciting and rewarding. I'm not sure what career paths you're interested in taking, but I can assure you each and every one of them will have room for learning, whether that means continuously gaining new professional skills or simply working with different people who have wisdom to share with you.

Alex’s Answer

Hi Miguel,

As a Project Manager I have the pleasure of working with various groups and interacting with them in various capacities. I get to understand what they do and how they impact the project I am managing. It is a very rewarding career in that, I get to enjoy the fruit of my labor after delivering a project on time and on budget. Being a Project Manager is like being a coach of a football team. I coordinate the various plays because each project team members or small groups each have their own play they have to follow with my guidance to bring the ball to the opposite end zone, in my case, to the completion of the project.
I have learned with my skill sets that I can work in various industries, all though they might be different in nature, managing projects remain fundamentally the same no matter where you go, but may vary ever so slightly depending on the type of project.

Hope that helps!

William’s Answer

There are a few basic but very important things that you can learn from a career. First, you'll grow as a person because you'll develop a greater understanding of how to perform with others as a team driving toward a common goal. This will give you a sense of belonging but will also be an opportunity for you to see how important it is to treat others with respect. Second, communicating effectively, efficiently, and with kindness will take you far. Third, never underestimate the power of listening and understanding what others have to say...you don't need to have the pressure of trying to solve everything yourself. You may have noticed that all of these points are about interacting with other people and are not so much about a specific trade or business. Yes, you will learn those business specific skills on the job too but it's the personal interactions that will provide you the most growth and rewards.

Christine’s Answer

Hi Miguel!
I love that this question is so broad. We learn alot from the many career and job paths we take in our lives. The main constants, regardless of the profession and in my opinion, are time management, respect, ethically conduct, and teamwork. I have learned all of these useful skills throughout my career paths in life. I learned that when you have a schedule to adhere to and other people relying on you you tend to invest more in organizing your life to be on time. You learn that you benefit from this and also the people you work with benefit as well. Respect, personally and professionally, is earned and you learn the many ways to earn and give respect in most job paths. Ethical conduct also encourages you to critically think about your personal and professional decisions before you make them so I consider this skill to be the most valuable.

Hope this helps!
Christine
