Alli Taylor’s Answer

The short answer: It's great! The long answer: If you want to make lots of money, this is not the path for you. Magazines pay editorial staff and journalists very little until you've been around for about 10 years - which for many of us is too long. Working on the advertising side of magazines, however, is paid well. I will say, however, the camaraderie, creativity, friendship, and perks of working at a magazine are all wonderful. I hardly feel like I'm working at all most of the time!

Sydney’s Answer

This is a great question! The world of magazines and physical print is such a great one. I think this question depends a lot on which publication you work for. I have worked for a free local publication that relied solely on ads. This business model is great for the public, but brings lots of challenges. This company actually went under during covid. In my experience there is an arts director, as well a hired photographers, stylists and social media coordinators. If you are/or become an expert in your field, are fast and confident in what you do and are committed to doing your best work, I'm sure anyone would love to have you! Try and find internships and go from there! See if the position is a good fit for you and find out how the company culture functions/treats issues like you're interested in. Good luck !!
