Shaun’s Answer

The purpose of college is for gaining higher education for jobs and trades that require or recommend it.

Going to college should be a priority if you wish to work in a highly-intellectual field or need a degree to achieve your career goals. That's not to say that those two criteria are the ONLY reason to go to college, but they're likely the most prevalent reasons to do so!

Depending on what you choose to study will determine how long it takes to complete it all. A typical Bachelor's degree will take 4 years to obtain. Going for a Master's Degree usually takes 1-2 years and a Doctorate is usually another 4 years in addition to a Bachelor's degree. This will vary among all fields of studies and what is being offered at your university of choice.

What college to go to is really up to you, your preferences, and what you hope to learn and gain from it all! Community colleges will allow you to get started with the low-level courses that you can use to transition into a large-scale university. Large scale universities are all distinguished with their own program and accolades about how excellent their study programs are. Some schools specialize in medicine, some in finance, some in entertainment. It's really about you taking the time to research what each college in your area or globally has to offer and seeing what you can make work! Lastly, the timeline on when to go to college is completely up to you! Going straight from high school to college is always a good idea so that you don't lose the momentum of schooling and studying! There's nothing wrong with waiting to go to college either, it's all about what you're able to focus on and the resources you have to make it all possible!

Kamal’s Answer

Dear zpro

It takes courage to ask a question that's on the minds of many students. Although college isn't for everyone, it's a wondrous and wonderful place where you can learn about yourself, your values, and your beliefs by being challenged.

It's where you'll learn to be independent and be yourself while being exposed to new ideas and thoughts. While theoretical learning is essential, supplement it with some experiential learning to secure your future.

You'll make great friends and experience life's ups and downs in a mostly safe environment with lots of support, second chances, and services such as counseling, career counseling, basic health care, student organizations, and food pantry, among others.

Moreover, you may meet the love of your life, and college opens a big window onto a small world. Finally College is also easy and beats working a minimal job any day of the week.

You might think I was an A student who studied day and night, but I got As, Bs, and Cs (I just didn't like the sound of D) and graduated. I recall my college years as the happiest days of my life, even though I never got wasted every night or took any drugs.

I lived in a campus housing for international and American students where I met wonderful friends who supported and loved me for who I am.

If you can't afford a 4-year university, community college is an excellent place to get your feet wet before transferring to a 4-year university. Go to college, and your eyes will be opened to endless possibilities that you didn't know existed.

You'll certainly succeed!

Becky’s Answer

Zpro,

A great question to reflect on.

The benefit and purposes of college have been questioned for centuries. This notion has received even more attention in recent years, where a few individuals who have not attended college have been able to showcase their success in media and other social platforms. As such, it would make sense for young adults to ask a similar question. Every situation has many pros and cons. Here are some benefits of pursuing a college degree. In addition to the knowledge, learning, and academic skills one gains, there are also many personal development. With each course and degree, one develops discipline and organization and becomes a better communicator, therefore, more effective in personal and business relationships. An educated individual is often more efficient in strategizing simple and complex tasks as compared to individuals who have not had formal education. Finally, education has been integral to many career paths in the current human and societal landscape. With it, the chances of having a profession or career are more manageable to establish.

Good luck with your decision.

Becky

Becky recommends the following next steps:

Speak and spent time with individuals with a variety of professions
Observe your own personality, reflect, maybe write a journal to see what inspires and motivates you to make a decsion
Work with a career counselor at your school
