There are many ways to get into the basics of fashion designing. Here are a few ideas:

Take a fashion design class. There are many fashion design classes available online and in person. These classes can teach you the basics of fashion design, such as pattern making, draping, and sewing.
Intern with a fashion designer. This is a great way to get hands-on experience in the fashion industry. You will learn about the different aspects of fashion design, such as sketching, pattern making, and sewing.
Read fashion magazines and blogs. This is a great way to stay up-to-date on the latest fashion trends and to learn about different designers.
Visit fashion museums and exhibitions. This is a great way to see different fashion designs and to learn about the history of fashion.
Experiment with your own designs. The best way to learn about fashion design is to experiment with your own designs. Try different fabrics, patterns, and silhouettes. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. The more you experiment, the better you will become at fashion design.
Here are some additional tips for learning fashion design:

Be patient. It takes time and effort to learn fashion design. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results immediately.
Be creative. Fashion design is all about creativity. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new things.
Have fun! Fashion design should be enjoyable. If you're not having fun, you're less likely to stick with it.

Hello Kevonni, I'm glad to hear you're interested in fashion design! To make the most of your learning, here are some actionable steps you can follow:

1. Study the clothes you own: Observe the construction, pocket placement, fabric selection, and other details. Note what you like and dislike about each piece.

2. Practice sewing: Try recreating your clothes, or sew a simple garment. Start with basic patterns and work your way up.

3. Conduct market research: Visit stores to discover current trends and analyze what's popular. Pay attention to colors, patterns, and styles.

4. Visit the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC: Make use of their extensive fashion library and request access to historical pieces. Examine these up close to learn about past fashions and their construction methods.

5. Attend FIT exhibitions: Take advantage of the free public exhibits to gather inspiration and further your knowledge about fashion.

By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to learning the basics of fashion design. Good luck on your journey!

Hi Kevonni!

I was a fashion designer in NYC for about 7 years before going to business school. I would love to help with your question! You are completely on the right track. Here are some additional tips and feel free to reach out to me directly if you have further questions.

Sarah recommends the following next steps:

Read up on what is happening in the fashion industry (Women's Wear Daily / WWD is the daily industry newspaper we all read)
Follow your favorite fashion designers on Instagram and TikTok. DM your favorites with a short message introducing yourself as a high schooler interested in fashion design and see if they would be open to a 15 minute Zoom call for advice. Come with 3 excellent questions that are specifically tailored to their brand and their individual path in fashion design. Stay in touch with the ones you have great vibes with - connecting once a quarter is a good rule of thumb.
Get very comfortable in the full Adobe Suite (especially Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign), PLM, and 3-D design. Watch youtube tutorials for all of these and see if your high school has access to any of them for free.
The go-to book for fashion illustration technique is called "9 heads" and you can buy it used for under $15. Buy tracing paper and practice drawing on top of the sketches in this book. Then you can come up with your own fashion illustration style!
