Your local EMS squad is a great place to start! I did it when I was in high school and was able to get some basic EMS certifications before I joined the Navy.

There are many Volunteer Ambulance Corps that are more than happy to get volunteers! When I was in college, I thought I wanted to go into EMS/Medical field. I signed up for my town's volunteer ambulance corps, and I gained tons of experience. I was able to get CPR certified through them and always felt like I was helping out my community. Even though after a few years I realized this was not for me, I am extremely happy I was able to do this and gain experience. You do not know until you try!
Not all places offer volunteer work, but do your research based on where you live. I personally know that there are a ton of volunteer opportunities in Westchester, New York. Also, many people volunteer AND work in the EMS field, so it is a perfect opportunity to connect and learn more about how you can also do this for a living if you would like.

Contact the local EMS agencies in your area inquire about volunteer opportunities. Many EMS agencies offer volunteer programs that allow high school students to gain experience and learn more about the field. They will let you know the age requirements for volunteers and f you need to complete certain training programs such as CPR certification or first aid training. Some EMS agencies may allow you to shadow EMS workers to gain experience and learn more about the job and other opportunities. Good luck with everything.

Hi Barbara, great question. As others have described, this field has volunteer opportunities if you do a little research and reach out and ask the organizations in your community. They other suggestion I have is to look to see what certification opportunities are available that will help you land those volunteer roles - CPR, etc. You may be surprised there are areas where you can be certified without extensive classes.
Good luck, Barbara!
