As a business student, how do I know what sector to pursue?

I am currently pursuing consulting, but I am not sure if I want to commit my career to it. Thanks

Hi Nick! The great thing about Consulting is that it provides a wide range of experience across business. You can tap into different industries (e.g., finance, technology, manufacturing, etc) or functions within a business (e.g., HR, Operations, IT). All this to say is you don't have to commit to it if you decide it's not for you long term. I was in consulting for 2 years and decided it was not my career path, and I looked for other jobs where I was able to leverage the experience I gained in consulting. Over the years, I've changed careers 4 times - all within "business" but with very different topics. However, the skills I've learned in consulting proved invaluable throughout all of my career changes.

If you're unsure if consulting is right for you, I'd suggest speaking with your professors/counselors at schools to hear about other options. Also, consider which courses you find interesting to you! That may be a good start to determine which types of roles you apply for after school.

From my observations, you can gain excellent basic knowledge in business management, strategy, operations, and finance. You'll be able to tackle various situations and quickly contribute by asking intelligent questions and assisting in problem-solving. You'll also experience a wide range of industries, from automotive to agriculture to energy and more. Consultants are often great communicators since they regularly interact with people at all levels, from top executives to new employees.

I mention this because consulting can be an ideal starting point for your career! You don't have to stay in consulting forever. You can explore various industries and maybe decide to work in autonomous driving or lead a nonprofit organization focused on social impact. Regardless, the skills you gain from consulting will be extremely valuable. They will look good on your resume, and you'll display the confidence and abilities that come with being a consultant.

If I could go back, I might consider consulting as a career choice. Joining a reputable consulting firm can open up new possibilities for you. Keep in mind that this perspective comes from someone who hasn't been a consultant but has worked closely with many and is continuously impressed by their skills. Nowadays, we aren't tied to one company or career path. Life is about change, so I encourage you to keep exploring career options and opportunities, even when you become a consultant!

Your professors can also be a valuable resource, as many of them have professional backgrounds in the subjects they teach.
