Hello Tiarra, this platform can serve as a valuable resource, providing guidance tailored to your specific needs. Securing a job as an 11th grader might be challenging, but remember, it's about finding something that suits your schedule, even if it seems limited at first. The service industry can be a great learning ground, offering you the chance to develop excellent interpersonal skills. You'll gain firsthand experience dealing with customers and understanding how businesses, like restaurants, operate.

While on the job, take the time to engage with people - your customers and colleagues alike. You'll often find that learning about others' paths can lead you to discover something that aligns with your own aspirations and objectives.

Moreover, don't lose sight of your academic goals. Pursue that college degree with determination. Once you graduate from high school, the added value of a college degree can significantly boost your career prospects. Employers often appreciate the extra effort it represents. Best of luck on your journey!

I'm not sure about sites like EvolveMe, there are a few reviews online saying that it is helpful but it may take collecting a lot of points to receive sweepstakes. You said you don't know what college you want to attend, do you know what you want to study? Start at local colleges, because you can fill out the FAFSA and potentially qualify for local and state scholarship and grants. To eliminate hefty costs, look into local community colleges and 4-year colleges. In some cases, it is cheaper to attend a community college, obtain a associate degree, then attend a local university to prevent out-of-state tuition costs.

As far as jobs, once you get out of high school your chances for a better job will improve. You could look into internships that could lead to jobs. For instance, if you're interested in real estate (which doesn't require college, just some tests), you may be able to do some internships in high school and establish a relationship with the company and secure yourself a job. If you want to rule out college or even if you want to do college, the U.S. Post Office has great benefits and pays well. Good luck!

George’s Answer

Only people in your area can effectively speak about the job market.

1st question I have: "WHY?"
Why do you need college? When you can answer this question more answers will become clear.

IF college is a necessary path,
A. You should be working hard in H.S. Taking all the advanced classes you can.
B. Next, go to the local community college.
C. then.... transfer to the University to finish Bachelor degree at in-state school that has your degree program.

Going straight to the University is a massive waste of money - probably debt, that will continue to take life from you for years, and years into the future.

Great question! 11th Grade is the perfect time to use CareerVillage and EvolveMe for guidance! Besides advice on CareerVillage, EvolveMe offers a wealth of resources to help you shape your future.

Visit EvolveMe to find short-term work experiences, practice mock interviews, and enhance skills to expand your network, job shadow, and create your post-high school plan. EvolveMe is designed to cater to your needs and open up a world of opportunities while you earn points for gift cards from popular brands or even win scholarships in weekly drawings!

Evelyn recommends the following next steps:

Then, if it’s helpful, when I was your age, I had a job at McDonalds. I started on grill, then moved to cashier and drive thru. By the time I finished high school, I was training other people how to do everything. I learned a lot of skills that still help me today like time management and customer service, but food service is just one of many job options open to you. Consider what you might enjoy from retail to banking, hospitality to marketing/social media, construction trades and so much more. It’s a great time to try out different things and look at organizations or brands you like to see what they offer.
Finding ways to connect through people you already know (like teachers, neighbors, family friends or religious leaders) can also help open doors you didn’t even know were there. Don’t let not knowing people (yet) stop you from taking steps forward – put together with your interests, skills and curiousity, CareerVillage and EvolveMe can help expand your world!
