What is it like working as a imagineer for disney?
I have no idea what I want to do in life but I love Disney and all the rides there. I think it would be amazing to build rides that bring kids joy on the best day or days of there lives. I live in Florida where Disney world is for context. I would love to know how I could maybe get my foot in the door. Is there a scholarship they have at a certain college? What type of engineers work at Disney company? What requirements due you have to meet to be offered a job interview? Etc. I would also like to know if I should work for the company like due they treat there engineers well and stuff. Thanks for reading. 😊

Hi Samantha,
I'm currently a Senior Controls Engineer at Walt Disney World, and I can say it is a fabulous place to work! We have all sorts of engineers on our team from all sorts of schools, but most of them come from degree programs in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering. We also have folks with Computer Engineering, Computer Science, IT, Materials Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mathematics backgrounds as well (and probably lots more). And of course, even if you don't take a STEM route towards one of the engineering majors, there are lots of other professionals who work hard at creating the rides including writers, graphical artists, costume designers, project managers, etc. so whatever you're passionate about, there's bound to be a place for you.
If you're looking to get your foot in the door as an engineer, the Professional Internship program is by far the best way to do that. Through this program, current and recent college students can work at Disney for a limited time (for the engineering interns at the parks, it's about 6 month terms) on all sorts of projects and teams. Almost all of the young engineers who come into our department come from this internship program. To apply, keep your eye on the Disney Careers site for openings (https://jobs.disneycareers.com/professional-internships). You can apply as often as you like, but know that most interns selected end up being in the Junior year or later.
If you're looking to get your foot in the door even earlier and improve your odds of getting an internship, the Disney College Program is a great opportunity. You'll likely be working some form of park operations (attractions, merchandise, housekeeping, etc.) instead of working in your field of study, but it's a great way to gain a better understanding of the company and whether or not you'd like to work here in a long term capacity. It will also provide you access and visibility to the network of professionals, as you'll have the opportunity to meet with engineers and other professionals in the company to talk with them about what they do, and introduce yourself and share your passion.
But no matter what you end up doing, remember that you always have the power to create happiness and bring joy to the people around you no matter what you're doing!

Some encouragement from a fellow theme park enthusiast. Don't give up on your dreams, push yourself everyday and always be a team player. Out of all the business books I have read my absolute favorite is called Love Works by Joel Manby. Joel Manby was the CEO of Herschend Family Entertainment (Silver Dollar City & Dollywood) and also the CEO of Sea World for a time. I really think you would like his book and could apply the books lessons in your daily work life. Good luck on your theme park journey!
