I began my journey with welding (on dry land, mind you!) when I was quite young, and it helped me pay my way through college. Early in my career, I discovered that I could earn a decent living (still above water) to support my family, without the hazards that come with diving and underwater welding. You can enjoy a longer, safer career with welding above water - whether it's on solid ground or an offshore platform/barge. I encourage you to look into the career lifespan and salary prospects of an underwater welder compared to those of an above water welder. The more knowledge you gather, the better equipped you'll be to make an informed decision.

The certification and education required will likely depend on the employer. I'd start by looking at what the requirements are for jobs posted @ https://www.indeed.com/q-Marine-Welder-jobs.html or similar sites.

This is a very specialized job and requires extensive diving and welding training/experience. https://waterwelders.com/smoothest-path-to-an-underwater-welding-career/ has a list of steps. I'd take a few of scuba diving lessons to see what the underwater experience is like. You could even get a few diving certifications which may help you be more prepared for an underwater welding school.

I'd also take some welding classes or formal training to ensure you like that part of the job. This way you could always fall back on this experience if you get tired of diving.
