Entrepreneurship is not your only path. There are many people working freelance in their fields which can be as varied as a graphic designer to a web developer, even business consulting. There are many websites that share such opportunities. However, step 1 is to hone your skills and build a network in that field.
For this you require experience, mentorship and work with potential clients or at least have references. To be your own boss, you may have to start under someone (a boss!), gather some experience, understand how the business works, what's a competitive billing rate that would also satisfy your requirements. Eventually, you can branch out on your own and gradually have your own freelance offering.
There are many who follow this path. It gives them the flexibility they crave and Yes, be their own boss.

There are so many opportunities to be your own boss, from freelancer or contractor to running your own business. While that comes with a great deal of freedom, there are also challenges. Income is not always steady, finding work/business may be hard, and you won't have insurance coverage or PTO. Mortgages are also hard to come by as they have a lot of questions about your income dependability. However, you do get to manage your own life and schedule.
The best way to get started is to learn a lot of skills in a field you like. Learn the technology, learn how to market yourself. Get credentials to show you're legit and add credibility to your name. Do a lot of networking! And mostly be patient.
I say all this as someone who is an LLC owner and has done freelancing in the past.

BJ, there are many career paths to being your own boss. Ask yourself what are the most important things to me in my career? Do those things offer me satisfaction and purpose? These are the next steps to being your own boss: 1) get the best education you can in your chosen interest.
