Hi Alyssa,

That’s great to hear that you’re interested in becoming a pediatric surgeon! Here are some educational institutions in Minnesota that could help you on your path:

University of Minnesota Medical School: The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Medical School is committed to improving the lives of children through research, service, education, and advocacy. They offer over twenty-five training programs across a myriad of specialties and professions.

Children’s Minnesota: Children’s Minnesota is the first and only hospital in Minnesota to earn the highest level of distinction awarded by the American College of Surgeons for health systems that perform routine to complex surgical procedures in newborns, children, and teens.

Remember, becoming a pediatric surgeon involves several years of education, including undergraduate studies, medical school, and specialized surgical training. It’s important to choose a college that not only offers strong pre-medical and medical programs but also provides opportunities for research and internships in pediatrics.

Good luck with your educational journey! 😊

Hi Alyssa - Great to hear that you're considering a career in medicine! As Amit mentioned, it's a multi-stage process, so the first point to consider is which undergraduate programs have good pre-med programs - there are certain pre-med class requirements (classes) that you have to have before being able to apply for medical school. AAMC pre-med requirements: https://students-residents.aamc.org/system/files/2023-07/MSAR_Premed_Course_Requirements_07.17.23.pdf

Every undergrad program is different, and you don't have to major in STEM, but that generally helps meet the requirements without having to take extra classes! "Pre-med" will look different at every school - some have formal tracks and others are more informal (like certain majors will help you complete the requirements). That said, you probably won't take medical school classes in undergrad, so focus on areas you're interested in + classes that would be helpful as groundwork for medical school.

Also remember that you'll have to take the MCAT (medical school admissions test), so it'll be important to have a good understanding of the subjects covered in that test.

All the best!

Look for pre-med undergraduate programs
