Miranda,

One of my work experiences before going to PA school was a psychiatric nurse technician in an inpatient behavioural health unit, so let me share my insights with you. For myself, I was a registered mental health counsellor in Australia, so I guess you could say the training to become a counsellor was part of my schooling. Then, a few years later in the U.S., I completed a training program at a community college to become a CNA (certified nursing assistant). I think my CNA credential was key to getting the psychiatric nurse technician role, and it's easy to see that because I used a lot of the skills and knowledge in the CNA training in my role, such as monitoring vital signs and blood glucose. My psychiatric nurse technician colleagues came from several different backgrounds in terms of education and training, including EMT (emergency medicine technician), CNA, and high school diploma work training on the job. Speaking of which, the application requirements for positions similar to psychiatric nurse technician can vary quite a bit from place to place and from state to state, so it could be helpful for you to look those up, based on where you live and where you're interested in working.

Let me know if you have any specific questions I can help with. Good luck!

Hello Miranda

What an amazing career to go into. Psychology is a world in itself and you have so many venues you can dive into within this healthcare
branch. A psychiatric technician can do many things and the choices are limitless, you can even continue into an advanced role
if you choose to do so.

A psychiatric technician works in psychiatric or mental health facilities, assisting and supporting individuals with mental health disorders and developmental disabilities. These technicians play a vital role in providing direct care, supervision, and therapeutic interventions to patients under the guidance of psychiatrists, nurses, and other mental health professionals. Their primary focus is to help individuals manage their conditions, improve their well-being, and work towards achieving stability and recovery.

The main qualifications to become a psychology technician are a bachelor’s degree in psychology and prior work experience. Students interested in this career should take courses in abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, and personality psychology. You can find entry-level opportunities through internships and research positions at universities, or find a position that offers on-the-job training to new employees. In addition to education and work experience, you should have excellent analytical and organizational skills, along with a keen understanding of laboratory procedures and techniques.
