Here are three main reasons their work is crucial:
Improving Athletic Performance: They create lighter and more efficient equipment, such as carbon-fiber bikes and drag-reducing swimsuits, to help athletes reach their full potential.
Increasing Safety and Preventing Injury: They design protective gear, like helmets and pads, and study how athletes move to reduce stress on joints and muscles.
Enhancing the Game Environment: They develop better sports venues, advanced playing surfaces like shock-absorbing courts, and high-tech sensors for accurate performance measurement and fair play.

Hi Josh,
This is a great question! I have spent many years as an automotive and defense engineer though engineering principles apply in many industries. I see sports engineering as very important with a large landscape of engineering applications. Some areas that come to mind – The concepts, requirements, design, development, and testing/validation of sports gym training equipment. In addition, the design and control of software and sensors to monitor athletes as they train. Also, there are roles in the design of sports arenas/facilities. Furthermore, the equipment which athletes wear needs to be designed to meet safety requirements. Best wishes as you explore your options for a future career.
