Hello LJ,

If you're aspiring to become an interior designer, the most commonly pursued major is indeed interior design. A multitude of universities provide comprehensive four-year undergraduate programs in this field. These programs delve into the core principles of interior design, innovative design techniques, and practical use of software tools such as CAD.

Take for instance, Florida State University. The Department of Interior Architecture and Design at FSU has held a prominent position among the top interior design colleges for more than four decades. To further highlight its excellence, the program was recently ranked third in the 2022 list of best colleges for interior design by College Rank.

Wishing you all the best on your journey.

The college that you want should be in line with your needs. If you need an online school in interior design search for that. Most have in person. I personally feel like they are all good schools. The main thing is what do you want from it? Do you want a certificate, or a degree in the field? Some well known schools are very expensive. So your school loan would be alot. Try to get as many scholarships lined up while your in high school to help pay for classes, books, transportation and food. Working in a furniture store while in high school and college will help you get experience in design and sales. Make some design boards with PowerPoint. Make renders with free render software online like chief architect or sketch up. Those are 2 online softwares that the industry uses. So this gives you the opportunity to practice and make a portfolio.

Also find out if the college you are looking at is CIDQ (Council for Interior Design Qualification) certified. For me, going to school and then becoming a licensed interior designer is my goal. I wish I would've known about CIDQ certified schools, as that would have helped me to becoming licensed sooner. You will have less work hours to fulfill towards applying for the NCIDQ Exam. Here is the NCIDQ link to find out more: https://www.cidq.org/

Whether you are looking to be licensed or not, I would refer to Aisha's answer. Find some colleges that list classes you will take in the major and compare. You will want a balance of conceptual and technical design classes (Drawing, Software, Drafting, etc.) . Also see if the college posts previous graduates work, this will help with what type of work the college expects out of its students.

Hope this helps!
