How hard is it to become a paleontologist?

I'm a junior, and I'm interested to become a paleontologist. I've learned a lot about the evolution of animals and how they adapted to survive. I also learned about fossils and about different types of minerals in rocks. #paleontology

Hi Timmy,

Being a paleontologist takes a lot of hard work, but it is rewarding. I'm actually a geologist but I have a minor in micro paleontology. Where I went to school (Morehead State University), we did not have dinosaur fossils. or large animal fossils, but instead we have some of the best Mississippian aged fossils in the world. The type of paleontologist you want to be really depends on the location of your school. Also, most schools do not have a undergraduate program in paleontology, so you would first need to get your B.S. in geology, biology, or another related field.

I personally have had the pleasure of working for a museum and working on dinosaur fossils. They also allowed me to go with them to Montana for fossil finds. Although its super fun and rewarding, most paleontologist do not get paid very well. That is something you will have to consider while pursing this career choice.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
