What jobs should I work as a 16 year old that will give me valuable job qualifications?

What jobs should I work that will be useful for qualifications? I want to have a strong resume but I don’t want to be working jobs that i’m not proud to be putting on my resume. I also don’t want to work jobs that will cause people reviewing my resume to feel unimpressed.

Hi Kenny,

There is no job you can't be proud of, and especially at your age any experience is good. Every experience also gives you transferable skills.

Having said that, if you roughly know what you want to do in life, I would look for jobs or internships that go in that direction.

So, if you are going to be a doctor, nurse or anything in healthcare, see that you can get a job with a doctor or at a hospital. If you can't find a paid job, volunteer if you can and if a salary is not your main incentive. If you can't volunteer ask if you can job-shadow.

If you want to do something environmental or chemistry, see if you can find a job or internship in a lab.

If you want to be a fashion designer an internship with a tailor would be beneficial, and so on. It's also ok to do different things to see if you like that kind of work if you are undecided.

Good luck!

Hi Kenny, such a great question. I don't believe there is any job that you would not be proud of at 16 yrs old. Having a job, at your age, while going to school and participating in extra curricular activities (if you do) speaks volumes. It demonstrates you are driven, a hard worker and can multi task.....all great qualities. If you have a need to feel like you want to contribute more then look into employment that involves things you are passionate about and/or in field you are interested in for your adult career. This experience would provide you a great foundation as you move into and through college (if that is your path) and into your adult career. Best of luck!

How you do the job is more important/impressive than what you do. I recommend finding any place that sounds interesting that will hire a 16 year old. Then just do your best! The job description will usually tell you what "doing a good job" looks like. As you get older, not every job you've ever done will stay on your resume. You can choose to highlight the ones that are relevant to whatever new job you are applying to. True, sometimes employers want to see that you haven't had big gaps in employment, but that doesn't apply to someone your age. I honestly think they will be impressed if they see you were working and still doing well in school at the same time.

Hello there,

I truly believe that mastering selling skills can be incredibly beneficial.

1. Selling: It's not just about selling a product. It's also about promoting your ideas, proposals, and deals, which are crucial throughout your career. Cold calling, in particular, is an especially valuable skill to have.

2. Imagine landing a job at Costco, where you interact with customers and ask them if they're interested in solar or wireless phone options. This kind of experience can be fantastic! It pushes you beyond your comfort zone, helps you learn how to tailor your questions to different audiences, and teaches you the art of timing your queries just right.

Best of luck to you!
