Scott’s Answer

Hello Vikram. As Natalie says, it is a long process. First, you need to graduate from college and generally, you need to be near the top of your class. While you do not need to major in a science in college, there are required classes including a year of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and math. Showing that you have had varied and meaningful experiences (this can include participating in sports, student government, research or a myriad of other activities) can also enhance your chances of being accepted to medical school. In medical school which lasts 4 years, you choose the field you would like to study, such as in your case neurosurgery in your fourth year. You would have to apply to a training program for neurosurgery (which is very competitive so you would have to do well in medical school). The training program then takes seven years after which you can choose to do further training if you want to specialize further. It is a long road but if it is what you really want, I believe it is worth the effort. Good luck!

Madison’s Answer

First off, you have to have a High school degree or equivalent, then, you need any type of undergraduate bachelors degree, of some kind with completion of all pre/med required courses. That can be done by either a premedical/science major or by doing any other major and adding on these pre-rec classes in order to take/sit for the MCAT and to be able to apply to medical school. Then, you have to take the MCAT, this can be done during or after college but you need scores to apply to medical school. You may even need or want to take it more than once. Then you go to medical school, this can be MD or DO and you can be national in the US or IMG internationally. You then have to apply to the neurosurgery residency match. This is a very competitive residency match but certainly can be attainable!

Natalie’s Answer

Hello Vikram,

To become a neurosurgeon, you need to complete pre-med (undergrad) education, medical school, internship, and residency, which takes approximately 14 to 16 years. This is because neurosurgery is a highly complex field of medicine, and as a result, neurosurgeons undergo one of the longest training periods of any medical specialty. I would also recommend that you talk to your parents about a 520 accounts for your education. Look at the schools that you are interested in and perhaps you can talk with one of the students so they can share their tips and tricks. The best of luck!
