Jasmine, applying to college is a big step, and it definitely helps to have some resources. Sometimes, however, you will find that those resources are not just given to you. Be bold and proactive, seek out the answer, and you will find it.

Jasmine,

I wholeheartedly agree! I wish more schools would offer classes, workshops, seminars, programs, etc. to bring information regarding college and a college-going-culture to high school campuses!

As a former high school / college counselor, I was fortunate to be able to meet once a week for a College Counseling course for each grade (Grades 10, 11, and 12). I developed an age-appropriate curriculum for each grade based on a progressive plan to prepare students for the application process as well as the transition to college and/or life after high school. But it was very unique that I was allowed to do that! [And, unfortunately, since leaving, the school no longer offers these classes.]

Like many high schools, administrators and/or teachers are forced to choose among an ever demanding set of courses, programs, activities, that take time and energy away from the business of learning. Statutes, standardized testing, and district programming handed down in the political quagmire of education today, something must give. I believe that the misunderstanding of the process (not to mention the tedious - and sometimes crazy - process of applying itself) has undermined the importance of understanding and being prepared for this endeavor. In my current practice of helping students and families navigate the changing landscape of college admissions, I still hear those that view the process as a simple filling out of forms procedure. I mean, really, "how hard can it be?!" RRIIIIGGGGHHHHTTTT!!!

One of the wonderful things about CareerVillage.org, are the resources made available to you.
