Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you would like to start your business on x-plus size fashion.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Take some fashion design and management related courses
2. Do some analysis on x-plus size fashion design business, e.g. any entry criteria, competition status, etc.
3. Work for the fashion design house some time to understand the operating model and establish people network
4. Engage some factories to produce your design
5. Start the business online first
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

If there is one thing I wish did when I started my first business - it would have been to start sooner BUT I wouldn't be jumping to rent any space any time soon. This is a large overhead in operating costs that will impact what you can invest any funds to actually grow the business. Perhaps I would suggest looking into online shops instead where the start-up costs are much more lower.

First though.. I would recommend first understanding what is the problem you are looking to solve with this business? Really understand your audience and what do they care about.

Once you get your research through then next step is to pull together a business plan around your idea. Continuously be listening and understanding to your target market at every stage. Always be learning and seeing what works and what does not work.

Hi Olivia,

I would highly recommend to start with a business plan before renting or investing anything for your business. Get someone to review the plan and most important, challenge you on the plan. You don't need people around for feedback that will tell you that everything is great all the time.

Answer the 3 important types of questions of your brand/business/store to get to know IF, why, what and how you'll be successful:

-) Why
... do you think your business will be successful?
... is your business relevant for customers?
... add more here

-) What
... do you do?
... makes your business stand-out?
... is the competition doing?
... add more here

-) How
... do you operate?
... make sure that you attract customers
... add more here

Best regards,
Matthias

Hello, Olivia !

This sounds like such a marvelous goal, a store similar to Joanne's is a wonderful idea ! There is so much you can do with this store as you've mentioned with offering classes !

The first thing that you would want to do is look at the current available commercial spaces in your area and get an idea of how much rent would be. Figure that into your budget. Than figure in a budget for staff, how many people will you hire. Than, you would have to buy merchandise and sewing supplies for your store. Also explore any certificates or business licenses you may need locally by contacting City Hall in Fort Wayne. I have left a link for their website below.

This is a wonderful long term plan for you and it would be a real fun and worthwhile addition to the community ! Continue to ask specific questions as we are happy to give advice here !

Best wishes !

Hi, congratulations on wanting to start your own business. First off, I want to tell you that it takes a lot of hours, hard work and belief in yourself! You have to believe in what you are selling/offering in order to be passionate about it. Customer service is first and foremost. If you put yourself into the customer's shoes, you'll know exactly how to support their needs. This goes from product design, store layout/design, people you may hire as you grow and especially the quality of the product.

Having classes is a GREAT plus as that will draw in people and help with word-of-mouth advertising. You can also attend industry events, craft fairs, etc. Plus use social media, linkedin and discount sites like Groupon.
