Hi Zair,

Like every level in any career, a progression exists. Most, if not all agencies, want to see how you work as a patrol officer first before you advance to a more senior level. Being a detective, whether it be for Homicide, Narcotics, Burglary, or any other specialized unit requires certain skill sets that you develop as you progress through your career. You can demonstrate these skill sets as a patrol officer in the way you work every day. Can you talk to people? Are you analytical? Can you separate the logical from the illogical? Do you do more than just the minimum when you go to a call, stop someone on the street or just make casual contact while out and about? Can you learn from your mistakes? Do you write well? Do you do things as they should be done or do you cut corners? Are you squeamish at all? Do you mind working long hours? All these things (and more) can and do affect the end product (i.e., sending a crook to jail/prison or allowing him/her to go free).

Most agencies will look at your accomplishments and abilities when they decide whether to promote you to the position of detective. They want the best of the best out there analyzing crime scenes and gleaning information from witnesses/suspects.

That being said, get yourself hired, be a great street cop and show that you are dedicated to your community and the job...and maybe, you might make it to being a great detective.

Good luck!
