Doc’s Answer

Keylionna if you’re wondering how to become an ultrasound technician, there are basically 3 steps to follow in order to reach your goal. You'll need 2-years to complete your ultrasound technician education, depending on their level of education before beginning the process and how extensive an educational pathway you choose.

STEP 1 — ULTRASOUND ASSOCIATE DEGREE
An associate in sonography degree covers important subjects like anatomy, physiology, and math. Degrees from accredited institutions improve potential transfer opportunities or continuing education paths, and can be more appealing to employers.

STEP 2 — ULTRASOUND CERTIFICATION
After completing your sonography degree, it’s time to get certified with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS®). You must choose from four prerequisite pathways, all of which require passing scores on the basic Sonography Principles and Instrumentation exam and additional corresponding specialty exams. Most states only require ultrasound techs to have an associate degree and professional certification. Four states—New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota and Oregon—also require techs to be licensed; some employers require it.

STEP 3 — GAIN EXPERIENCE
Sonography is a hands-on, highly technical profession, so practical experience is key. Most degree programs include a clinical internship component to give you hands-on experience.

If you love helping people and you are interested in a career in diagnostic imagery, or ultrasound technology, sonography may be a great career path for you Keylionna.

Hello Keylionna!

To become an ultrasound technician, also known as a diagnostic medical sonographer, there are several steps you need to follow. These steps typically include obtaining the necessary education and training, gaining clinical experience, and obtaining certification.

Step 1: Research and Understand the Field Before pursuing a career as an ultrasound technician, it is important to research and understand the field. This includes learning about the job responsibilities, work environment, and potential career opportunities. It is also essential to have a genuine interest in healthcare and helping others.

Step 2: Obtain a High School Diploma or Equivalent The first educational requirement to become an ultrasound technician is to obtain a high school diploma or equivalent. This is a basic requirement for admission into any formal education program.

Step 3: Complete an Accredited Ultrasound Program The next step is to complete an accredited ultrasound program. These programs are typically offered by colleges, universities, vocational schools, or hospitals. It is important to choose a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). The program duration can range from one to four years depending on the level of education pursued (certificate, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree).

Step 4: Gain Clinical Experience After completing the didactic portion of the ultrasound program, students are required to gain clinical experience. This involves working under the supervision of experienced sonographers in a healthcare setting. Clinical experience allows students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world scenarios.

Step 5: Obtain Certification While certification is not always mandatory, it is highly recommended as it demonstrates competency and professionalism in the field. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) offers certification exams in various specialties such as abdominal sonography, obstetrics and gynecology sonography, and vascular sonography. To be eligible for certification, candidates must meet specific education and clinical experience requirements.

Step 6: Continuing Education and Career Advancement Once certified, ultrasound technicians are encouraged to participate in continuing education to stay updated with the latest advancements in the field. This can include attending workshops, conferences, or pursuing advanced certifications in specialized areas. Continuing education not only enhances knowledge but also opens up opportunities for career advancement.

In summary, the steps to become an ultrasound technician include researching the field, obtaining a high school diploma, completing an accredited ultrasound program, gaining clinical experience, obtaining certification, and pursuing continuing education for career growth.
