What career pathway is most effective in changing lives?

I have decided a long time ago that I would make the most of the time I am given on this Earth. My desire is to have a positive impact on as many people as possible. I want to be a key instrument in the improvement of society. The occupations I am considering include options such as doctor, dentist, and teacher. Through what profession could I help the most people in the most valuable way?

Joe’s Answer

I have asked myself this many times over the past 30 years of my career. At one point my dream was to be an M.D. and work for Mercy Corps; life, financial reality (at least perceived) got in the way. I've worked at various companies (mostly as a software developer) - some not for profit, some public, and now a private for-profit firm. While none are along the lines of my earlier dream of Mercy Corp, Doctors Without Borders, etc., I do like to think that one can nonetheless have an impact in multiple ways - regardless of career. At work, I hope that I've been able to relieve the stress of others more than contribute to it. Outside of work, time can be spent volunteering (coaching youth teams, tutoring at schools, etc), and treasury (money) can be offered to those organizations that one feels do truly help humanity. I'll close by stating that if one finds a career that is enjoyable (bearing in mind that every job includes frustrating aspects), then one will be happier - and that in turn spreads to everyone!

Kim’s Answer

Hi Samuel,

Joe has given you some great insight. Additionally, I think the fact that you are looking to make a difference in people's lives puts you in a great position to do so - regardless of what you decide to do. I was given some great advice early in my career that set the foundation for my leadership style. "Give more than you get and leave more than you take." I hope that becomes your legacy as well. Best of luck.
