What is the day in the life of a lobbyist like?

I am aware that many days are spent on capitol hill (normally at the state level), but what do the other days look like? Is it more of a work from home type job, etc? #agriculture #lobbyist

Virginia’s Answer

As a lobbyist, your main goal is to support your client's objectives. You might work directly for a company, be part of a trade association, or work for a firm that has multiple clients. To succeed, you need to understand which laws might affect your client and identify key decision-makers, like Members of Congress and their staff, who are involved with the legislation. You'll create a list of desired changes to the bill and then arrange meetings with these decision-makers to present your case.

Each day, you'll likely read and write policy reports, plan who to meet with and when, and network with other lobbyists who share similar goals. A big part of your job is learning about current events and how proposed laws could impact your client, so you can craft a strong story for them. Lobbying is really about telling a compelling story.

Lobbyists usually focus on a specific industry or topic, such as tech, energy, healthcare, or education. If you're interested in becoming a lobbyist, find a policy area you care about. You could start by working on Capitol Hill to learn how policy is made, or begin at a trade association or multi-client firm and work your way up.
