David’s Answer

Hello Yussuf! To answer your question about total pay a bit more directly, levels.fyi is a great resource for seeing self-reported salaries/stocks/bonuses for many companies. For instance, the median total compensation for beginner programming roles in Nairobi is about 4,000,000 KSh per year. As Mrinalini mentioned in another answer, programming salaries are typically among the higher for entry-level positions.

Regarding your question on how to secure a programming job, there are several paths you can take. In the past, having a degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science from a university was almost a necessity, but now there are multiple alternatives. These include attending a coding bootcamp, utilizing the plethora of free online learning resources, gaining experience through internships, and creating personal projects. All these can significantly increase your chances of landing a job.

Jason’s Answer

Hey Yussuf - more than most jobs, the range of salary for programming jobs is really large. It depends on what field you're in (medical technologies, finance, ecommerce, business-to-business tools), where in the world you are, if you work remotely for a company that is based elsewhere.

As mentioned above, levels.fyi shows a bunch of useful data about different levels at large companies. Typically, things like web development studios and freelance web development have lower salary ranges than well established companies. Small startups that don't yet make money, but are instead funded by investors, have low salary ranges but the potential to make a lot of money down the line if the startup is successful.

Jason recommends the following next steps:
