Working on it as an incoming student ?

My university is more likely to offer internship opportunities from the second year. What are some skills that I should develop right now so that I can get internships from prominent companies / FAANG while majoring in electrical engineering?
I have no prior experience in doing internships!

Start by identifying your existing skills and the ones you're eager to cultivate (highlighting your enthusiasm and curiosity for these areas). For instance, you might be interested in expanding your knowledge in AI and ML or programming. Speaking from my experience as an Electrical Engineering major, I've learned that it's crucial not just to focus solely on hardware but to strike a balance between hardware and software skills.

Next, conduct a thorough research on the companies where you'd like to intern. Familiarize yourself with their programs, their latest products, and stay updated with their news and key personnel.

When you're applying, remember to stay true to yourself, be tenacious, and maintain a positive attitude. Lastly, be prepared to move for the duration of the internship program. Once you're there, strive to build a strong network with the people you meet in the company. This will be beneficial for future LinkedIn connections.

My advice would be to improve your problem solving skills by learning any programming language and continue working on them by solving leet-code problems. If you are interested in machine learning problems, practice with Kaggle.
Lastly,
1. Don't be afraid to apply for internships that seem out of reach. The worst that can happen is that you don't get the internship.
2. Highlight your transferable skills. Even if you don't have a lot of experience in the field you're interested in, you can still highlight your transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
3. Be persistent. Don't give up if you don't get the first internship you apply for. Keep applying and eventually you will find one that is a good fit for you.

Dear Fahmida Jannat,
If you are in Dhaka then forget about doing internship. I am in the USA with more than 13 years of experience. Even I am doing Master's in a reputed university in the USA, I am struggling to get internship. In theory, you will get internship but in reality it is not possible. If you are in Dhaka, try locally. Lots of companies in Dhaka provide internship opportunities. Buy items from PIE lab and practice yourself. Best of luck!

Thank you comment icon McGill’s Major in Electrical Engineering offers a broad understanding of key principles in rapidly advancing fields like computer technology, micro-electronics, automation and robotics, telecommunications, and power systems. So, first find out your interest in one topic and then get hands dirty as much as possible. For example, if you are interested in computer programming then do programming works yourself related to Electrical engineering. There are lots of materials available in the market for hobbyist.
