What should I know about a career in social work?
Hi :) I'm considering a career in social work and was wondering what a typical day in the life would look like. How much of it is based in technical aspects like answering emails or personal aspects like physically speaking to a client? What is something I should know if im considering a career in this field. Also is there any way that I could have a better chance at landing a well paying job out of uni? I've heard a lot of horror stories about how bad the pay is and have been trying to see how I can even that out.

I spent five years as a social worker at the Area Agency on Aging in my locality, and it was an incredibly fulfilling experience. We definitely need more dedicated individuals in this field. Although the pay may not be sky-high, the majority of folks who choose this career path do so with the aim of making a significant impact, rather than solely for financial gain. While I moved on from this role due to personal reasons, there are moments when I deeply miss the work I did. I particularly cherished the feedback from my clients and the knowledge that I had made a positive difference in their lives. The job can be emotionally intense, but the support within the social work community is always there. I would recommend seeking out volunteer opportunities within your local area. Schools, hospitals, or your local Area Agency on Aging are great places to start.
